A separate kind of conversation, not a setting.
A secret chat is not a toggle inside an ordinary Telegram conversation, it is a distinct chat you start on purpose, marked by a small padlock next to the contact's name. Where a normal Telegram chat is stored on Telegram's servers so it can sync across every device you own, a secret chat is end to end encrypted and lives only on the two phones that opened it.
That difference is the whole point. A regular chat is convenient precisely because it follows you to a tablet or a desktop app, and a secret chat trades that convenience for a conversation that exists nowhere except the two devices it began on. Whichever you choose, the choice is made once, at the very start of the conversation, rather than something you can switch mid way through the same thread.
Starting one and reading the padlock.
From a contact's profile, the option sits under Start Secret Chat, opening a fresh conversation separate from any existing thread with the same person. The padlock icon beside the name is the one visual cue that you are in a secret chat rather than a standard one, worth a glance before you send anything, since the two chat types can sit side by side in the same contact's history.
A secret chat also shows a set of coloured shapes unique to that particular conversation, a simple way for both people to confirm, if they choose, that no one has intercepted the connection. Most guests never need to check it, but the option exists precisely because Telegram wanted the feature to be verifiable rather than simply promised.
Self destruct timers, set per message.
Inside a secret chat, tapping the clock icon sets a timer running from seconds up to a week, after which each message deletes itself on both phones. Unlike WhatsApp's chat wide timer, Telegram's applies from the moment a message is read rather than the moment it is sent, so an unread confirmation waits patiently until you open it before its clock begins.
Screenshots inside a secret chat trigger a notification to the other person, a feature normal Telegram chats do not have, which makes the format slightly more self policing than most messaging apps manage by default.
What a secret chat gives up in return.
Because a secret chat lives on one device pair only, it will not appear if you switch phones, reinstall the app, or open Telegram on a laptop, which suits privacy but frustrates anyone expecting their whole history to travel with them. Forwarding messages out of a secret chat is switched off, and so is the ability to add the chat to Telegram's cloud based search across your other conversations.
For most people this is a fair trade for a single short conversation. It becomes a real inconvenience only if you expect to reference the same thread from a different device weeks later, which a booking rarely requires, since the whole point of the conversation is to arrange one evening and then be finished with it.
Whether a booking needs one.
A normal Telegram chat already carries none of our own record keeping on the other end, so a secret chat adds a layer of protection between your two devices rather than changing anything about how we handle the conversation. Guests who value the self destruct timer or the extra device level privacy tend to use it out of habit, and it works exactly the same way for booking a night out in De Pijp as for any other message.
Companions filed under curvy or tall read a secret chat message the same as a normal one on our end, since the format changes what happens on your phone rather than what reaches us. Choose whichever gives you the peace of mind you are actually looking for, since either way the reply arrives at the same speed.

Both apps work identically as far as arranging an evening goes, and a message button for each sits ready lower down this page. Neither app is asked to store anything on our side once the booking is confirmed, so the choice comes down to which trade off suits your own phone habits.
A worked example, booking a night out.
Say the plan is a late evening rather than a quiet dinner. Open a secret chat, send the usual three details, a name from the roster, De Pijp as the starting point, and ten o'clock as the hour, and set a short timer once the booking is confirmed, an hour or two is usually enough. The confirmation arrives, the evening happens, and by the time you are home the messages that arranged it have already cleared themselves from both phones.
The same sequence works identically in a normal Telegram chat or on WhatsApp; the secret chat simply removes one extra step, remembering to clear the thread afterwards, by doing it automatically on a schedule you set once at the start.
