Certain bookings ask for softness rather than fireworks: the end of a hard week, the first evening of a long trip, the night you want conversation that wanders instead of performs. Those evenings belong to Vanessa. She is twenty five, slim, 173 cm, with sandy brown balayage hair and hazel eyes, and a relaxed sweetness that works like the coastal light she styles herself after.

Curiosity is her engine. She studies languages for the pleasure of it, swapping grammars the way others swap novels, and compares notes with Samanta, our other collector of tongues; between them they could greet most of Schiphol's arrivals board. Her second collection is fragrance, sourced patiently and worn subtly, an interest she shares with Sonya in the Jordaan, though Vanessa's shelf leans lighter, more citrus and sea air than velvet and smoke. Her favourite phrase in any new language is always the same one: shall we walk?

The bicycle is her third companion. She rides everywhere, in all weather, with the calm fatalism of a true Amsterdammer, and she knows exactly which bridge has the best view at which hour. Ask nicely and the knowledge is yours. She claims the bridge knowledge is common; it is not.

In company she is gentle, unhurried and genuinely interested, the listener who remembers the middle of your story, not just the end. Nothing about her needs to be the loudest thing in the room, which is precisely why she stays with you afterwards. It is a gentle kind of attention, and it does not switch off.

Her home streets are in De Pijp, placing the southern hotels within minutes and the centre within an easy ride. An evening is arranged through one quiet WhatsApp exchange, confirmed fast, recorded nowhere. She will arrive relaxed. Within the hour, so will you.

Section 03, After hours

How Vanessa runs an evening.

Shall we walk is usually how it opens, in whichever language fits the mood. Vanessa's ideal evening starts on foot or on two wheels, one bridge she is loyal to at one particular hour, then a slow route to a quiet dinner that gives conversation room to wander, which is where hers is best. She asks real questions, remembers the middles of answers, and by dessert you will have taught each other at least one untranslatable word.

The rest is gentle by design: a soft-lit bar, a citrus and sea-air scent you will notice twice and place never, the sense of being accompanied rather than entertained at. Her attention does not switch off when the conversation pauses, so the pauses stop feeling like gaps. The evening ends the way her rides do, unhurried, slightly windblown and exactly where it meant to arrive.

Anything else, the desk answers at any hour

Q01Which language do we start in?

Yours. I collect grammars the way some people collect stamps, and corrections from a native speaker are the fastest lessons there are.

Q02The bridge, which one is it?

Told, never written. It changes with the season and the hour, and half its charm is arriving without expectations. Ask me on the night.

Q03What does relaxed company change?

Everything. A calm evening is not an empty one. Slow hours hold more, and I bring the room to breathe in them.

Vanessa.Tonight.

Vanessa is the right call for low-key, restorative evenings, and she is happy to greet you in the language of your choice. Give her a try in her own Dutch-accented English.
