What a VPN actually does.
A VPN routes your internet connection through a separate server operated by the VPN provider, encrypting the traffic between your device and that server. The practical effect is twofold: your internet provider and anyone else on the same local network can no longer see which sites you visit, only that you are connected to the VPN server, and any site you visit sees the VPN server's location rather than your own.
This is genuinely useful for exactly two things: hiding browsing activity from whoever runs the network you are connected to, and appearing to browse from a different location than your actual one. Both are real, well understood effects, not marketing language, though it is worth being precise about which problem each one solves before assuming a VPN covers something broader.
What it does not do.
A VPN does not make you anonymous to the site itself. A logged in account still recognises the same person behind it whether a VPN is running or not, because the account link happens above the network layer a VPN operates on. It does not stop a site from setting cookies or reading a browser fingerprint, since those happen at the browser level, entirely separate from the network route your traffic takes. It also shifts trust rather than removing it: the VPN provider itself can now see the traffic your internet provider used to see, so the provider's own reputation and policies matter as much as the technology.
The moments it genuinely earns its place.
A VPN is most useful on a network you do not control and cannot fully trust: a cafe, a hotel or an airport connection, exactly the kind used while travelling with a companion or waiting at a gate. On a home network already secured with a strong router password, the benefit is smaller, since the main thing a VPN hides on that network is largely already private between your device and your own router.
Choosing one, briefly.
A VPN worth paying for publishes a clear no logs policy and has had that policy independently audited at some point, rather than simply stating it. Free VPNs are worth treating with more caution than paid ones, since running the infrastructure costs money somewhere, and a service with no visible business model is often funding itself by collecting and selling the very data a VPN is meant to protect.
Speed is also worth a mention. A nearby server, ideally within the Netherlands or a neighbouring country, usually keeps the slowdown small enough not to notice during ordinary browsing, while a server on another continent can add a delay significant enough to matter for anything more demanding than reading text and loading photos.

A VPN does not make an internet connection faster, and any claim that it does is usually describing a narrow, specific case, such as an internet provider slowing certain traffic, rather than a general rule. A VPN does not protect against a device already compromised by something installed on it directly, since the VPN only secures the network connection, not the device sending traffic through it. A VPN does not prevent phishing, a convincing fake page still works exactly the same whether or not a VPN happens to be running underneath it.
Using it around travel and booking.

Most VPN apps now offer a quick toggle right from the phone's control centre or notification shade rather than requiring the full app to be opened each time, which removes the last bit of friction that used to make people skip switching it on for a short session. Setting the app to prompt automatically on any unrecognised network closes the gap entirely, so the decision is made once rather than repeatedly each time a new connection appears.
The same automatic prompt is worth setting up on a laptop too, where it is easier to forget compared with a phone that already asks before joining most new networks by default. A handful of minutes spent on that one setting removes the need to remember the habit manually every single time a new connection appears.
